Origins
The history of Good Friday is rooted in the New Testament and the events surrounding Jesus' crucifixion. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John describe the events leading up to Jesus' execution.
 
On this day, the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary is remembered. It is the Friday before Easter. Good Friday is observed as a day of sorrow and penance. As per the New Testament, on this day Jesus was crucified by the Romans.
 
Traditions
Good Friday is a day of sorrow, penance, and fasting. Traditions associated with Good Friday include: 
 
  • Fasting (Orthodox and Catholic) 
  • The Station of the Cross (Catholic) 
  • Wearing black (Orthodox) 
 
Significance
The death of Jesus on the cross is central to the Christian faith as it represents the ultimate sacrifice for the atonement of sins. 
 
Other names
Orthodox churches call Good Friday "Great Friday" and "Holy Friday"
